AGRI for Integration – an innovative approach to integrating third‑country nationals

The Agri for Integration project represents an innovative approach to integrating third‑country nationals (TCN) through the agri‑food sector. Its emphasis on a bottom‑up strategy, professional training, and links to the labour market suggests a practical and sustainable integration model.

One of the project’s key strengths is its focus on women from third countries, addressing their often more vulnerable position in the labour market and society. Career counselling and mentoring can significantly contribute to their successful inclusion not only in agriculture but also in the broader economy and community.

The project also considers the wider social context of migration, the labour market, and sustainable agriculture, creating an effective framework for integration that could inspire similar initiatives across the EU. Testing the strategy in five countries provides space to compare different approaches and adapt them to local conditions.

On the other hand, the project’s success will depend on the quality of implementation, real cooperation with local communities, and effective monitoring of results. The sustainability of such initiatives also requires long‑term support from political and economic actors.

Objectives

  • Facilitate partnerships among multiple stakeholders to integrate third‑country nationals (TCN) into the agri‑food sector.
  • Improve skills and employability of TCN through training in sustainable agriculture and career support.
  • Develop and promote best practices for integrating TCN into the agri‑food labour market.
  • Support social inclusion and environmental awareness among TCN and host communities.
  • Provide innovative educational tools on integrating TCN into the agri‑food sector.

Project Activities

  • Creation of a local integration strategy through multi‑level stakeholder partnerships and consultations.
  • Development and implementation of training programmes for TCN and organisation of “Bridge Events” connecting them with agri‑food employers.
  • Organisation of capacity‑building workshops for host community members, public‑sector employees, agri‑food employers, and professional trainers.
  • Implementation of a career‑mentoring programme for TCN, including training and mentoring sessions for coordinators, mentors, and mentees.

Results

  • Improved local integration strategies for TCN in the agri‑food sector through tailored, evidence‑based approaches.
  • Increased cooperation among local stakeholders, including public institutions, employers, and community members.
  • Strengthened skills and career prospects of TCN through targeted training and mentoring.
  • Enhanced social inclusion of TCN through development of intercultural competencies in host communities and promotion of environmental awareness.

The strategy and activities will be tested in nine pilot locations across five partner countries (Italy, Greece, Spain, Slovakia, Sweden).
