About us
The Slovak Humanitarian Council (SHR) has been active in the social field for over 30 years, providing assistance, services, care, counselling and various activities for the benefit of socially disadvantaged and disabled people.
SHR is currently focusing on providing assistance to people fleeing Ukraine, which was hit by the Russian military invasion in 2022. It is an implementing partner of international UN agencies (UNICEF and UNHCR), thanks to which the so-called safe spaces, Blue Dots, have been created where people on the run can find the necessary help and support. Its activities also focus on people who are asylum seekers in Slovakia and people with asylum and subsidiary protection who are trying to integrate in Slovakia.
SHR is accredited to provide specialist social counselling for vulnerable groups of people with a foreign origin. Assistance is mainly provided to foreigners with temporary and long-term residence in Slovakia who have been granted subsidiary protection in the past, and to a lesser extent, also to persons granted asylum or subsidiary protection on an ongoing basis.
SHR publishes the magazines Humanita, with the supplement Humanita Plus, which serves a number of disabled and socially disadvantaged citizens, and Carissimi, which is the only Hungarian-language magazine in Slovakia, intended for persons with disabilities (PWDs) whose mother tongue is Hungarian, their families, and for the professionals who work with them.
SHR is also active in the legislative sphere – it is a member of the advisory body of the Government of the Slovak Republic (the Council of the Government of the Slovak Republic for Non-Governmental Non-Profit Organizations), as a member of the Chamber of Non-Governmental Non-Profit Organizations, where it promotes the interests of the socially disadvantaged. It is also a member of the Slovak Government’s advisory body on persons with disabilities, and a member of the Slovak Government’s advisory body on the rights of the elderly and the adaptation of public policies to the process of population ageing, where such actively promotes the overall improvement of persons with disabilities and the elderly.
SHR is an active member of the NGO Advisory Body of the European Union Agency for Asylum (EUAA). Cooperation with EUAA also takes place in the framework of training and training manuals.
PROJECTS
Asylum seekers across the entire territory of the Slovak Republic are supported by our activities at the facilities of the Migration Office of the Slovak Republic.
The project helps people with asylum and subsidiary protection to integrate in Slovakia. Our offices in Bratislava and Košice provide expert assistance in a number of area.
The project focuses on people who were forced to leave their country as a result of the war in Ukraine and found temporary or permanent refuge in Slovakia.
If a foreigner finds himself or herself in the territory of the Slovak Republic without authorization for entry or is deprived of personal freedom, in most cases, his journey ends at the police detention center.
